TONI&GUY Hairdressing AcademyFacts & Stats

Cosmetology is an enormous industry with 1,286,000 individuals employed in some 298,000 salons and barber shops. Entry level people have no problem finding employment. There was an average of 1.4 job openings per salon in 2000.

Employment prospects are good .for those interested in re-entering the field and for recent cosmetology program graduates.   With the number of salons increasing, and the number of licensees decreasing , the near term employment prospects are quite promising.

Over 75% of the surveyed beauty establishments reported that they have been in business for 3 years or more. This high concentration indicates that the salon industry is stable and well established.

The average salon income, including tips, appears to be about $18.50/hour. While manicurists are currently only 2.6% of the current industry employees, some 21% of the anticipated vacancies are for professionals with those skills.
Nail Salons are an important source of employment in the industry. There are more Nail Salons than Barber Shops.
